Contrary to popular belief, today's "Great Song of 1978" is NOT about drugs.
It was actually inspired by a hockey injury!
Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones and vocalist Lou Gramm wrote "Double Vision" after seeing New York Rangers goalie John Davidson get knocked out during a game against the Buffalo Sabres!
Apparently, the game announcers repeatedly mentioned that John had suffered a concussion and was being treated for double vision. Mick, being from England, had never heard the term before and thought it sounded like a great song title...so they wrote a song (and their second album) around it!
Mick has said the group was well aware that the title was misinterpreted as a drug reference...but if it sold more records, that was okay with them.
Well, it sold more than a million copies and reached #2 on Billboard's Hot 100. It was also a Top 10 hit in South Africa (#5) and Canada (#7).
So I guess it was more than "okay." :-)
"Double Vision" by Foreigner: skating onto the list of "Great Songs of 1978!"
