Oh, to be a rock star in the '80s (or any other decade for that matter). Groupies were everywhere! The same thing applied to TV stars.
Rick Springfield was both, selling out concerts everywhere while simultaneously starring as Dr. Noah Drake on the daytime soap opera, "General Hospital."
Rick freely admits that he---uhh--dipped into the groupie pool while on the road, while at the same time maintaining a serious relationship with his soon-to-be wife, Barbara Porter.
He also freely admits that his Great Song of 1982, "Don't 'Talk to Strangers" (from the ironically titled album "Success Hasn't Spoiled Me"), was directed at Barbara as sort of a "Don't do what I do; Do what I say " message.
He blames his own paranoia for this, which may be true...but still...
At least today he appears to regret the whole situation--but he certainly doesn't regret the song!
"Don't Talk to Strangers" reached #2 on Billboard's Hot 100, and #11 on The Top Hot Tracks Chart. In Canada, it was a #3 hit on both the Top 40 and Adult Contemporary Charts.
The video was an MTV favorite, which certainly helped the song's popularity.
So Rick Springfield may have been a cad...but" Don't Talk to Strangers" turned out to be a Great Song of 1982. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cp42V938eBA
