Don't Stop! (1977) 6/29/20

Since it's an election year, I thought I'd present this little bit of music history:

One of Fleetwood Mac's most enduring songs from their 1977 “Rumours” album was not only a “Great Song of the '70s,” but arguably one of the most influential Presidential campaign songs in history.

“Don't Stop” was a #1 hit Canada, while peaking at #3 in the US, #4 in The Netherlands and #6 in Belgium.

Christine McVey wrote the song to reflect her feelings after breaking up with her husband and band mate John McVey, but in 1992, the song was reborn—with the group's permission—as the theme song for Bill Clinton's Presidential campaign.

In fact, it was played during the climactic balloon drop after Clinton won the nomination—right after he concluded his acceptance speech with the words: “Don't Stop thinking about tomorrow...”

And after he won the election, Clinton persuaded Fleetwood Mac—which had pretty much broken up—to reunite and play the song at his inaugural ball.

Regardless of politics, “Don't Stop” is a “Great Song of the '70s”on its own merit.
