Don't Get Me Wrong - The Pretenders (1987) 11/24/23

Tennis Anyone?

Today's Great Song of 1987, "Don't Get Me Wrong" by the Pretenders was inspired in part by tennis legend John McEnroe

According to the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde, John was also a talented guitar-playing Rock & Roll wannabe, who would attend their concerts and hang out backstage. They became good friends, and she started writing the song for him to record.

Somewhere along the way, however, Chrissie came up with lyrics that explored the complexities of love from a female perspective. Of course, that led her to keep "Don't Get Me Wrong" for herself (and The Pretenders).

When it was released as a single from the album, "Get Close," it topped Billboard's Mainstream Rock Chart, and #10 on The Hot 100. It became The Pretenders' last big hit in the US.

The video was, of all things, a tribute to the classic British TV series, "The "Avengers," starring Diana Rigg Emma Peel and and Patrick Macnee as John Steed. Footage from the show was used throughout, with Chrissie spliced in, playing "Emma.
