Don't Cry Daddy - Elvis Presley (1970) 3/25/23

A man loses his wife. Was it divorce? Was it death?

In today's "Great Song of 1970," we never find out, but what we DO know is that the man's sadness is affecting his children.

The song is "Don't Cry Daddy" by Elvis Presley...and it may surprise you to learn that it was written by a songwriter named Scott Davis.

Scott had already written "A Little Less Conversation" for Elvis and would also write "Kentucky Rain" for the King before changing his name to Mac Davis.

The song quickly became a triple chart hit: #3 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart, #6 on the Hot 100, and for the first time in 13 years, Elvis reached the Top 15 on the Country chart, peaking at #13.

On August 16th,1997, Lisa Marie Presley recorded a video of the song, singing along with her father's vocals on the 20th anniversary of his death. It was quite emotional back then, and in view of Lisa Marie's recent death, it packs an even bigger punch today.

"Don't Cry Daddy:" a "Great Song of 1970--and 1997--thanks to the Presleys. (and Mac Davis).
