Do It Again (1973) 2/13/21 Steely Dan

Updated: Feb 23, 2021

Lots of links today!

So far, since we started this blog in October of 2019, we've highlighted 3 songs by Steely Dan:

“Peg” (5/20/20)

“Reelin' in the Years (7/16/20)

“Rikki Don'T Lose That Number” (10/2/20)

But...up to now, we haven't highlighted the song that FIRST put them on the charts: 1973's “Do It Again!”

Actually, the song was released as a single in late '72 from their debut album “Can't Buy a Thrill.” but it didn't climb into the top 10 until early '73, reaching #6 in both the US and Canada.

Of course, the song was written by Steely Dan's dynamic duo of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, who wrote just about everything the group recorded.

As was the case quite often for groups in the '70s, the album version was edited and remixed for the single—which over the years has created some confusion for radio listeners. Even more so for concert goers, especially early on...when David Palmer would sing it, as opposed to Donald Fagen, who sang it on the recordings.

But in the end, it really didn't matter which version...or which singer...was your favorite. “Do It Again” was Steely Dan's first of many “Great Songs of the '70s!”
