Dim All the Lights - Donna Summer (1979) 11/8/21

Donna Summer was at the top of her game in 1979--and also at the top of the charts--repeatedly, with SIX "Great Songs" reaching the Top 5 during the calendar year!

My plan has been to highlight each of the six separately over a long period of time, and here's how it shakes down so far: The first was "Heaven Knows, which we highlighted on 7/11/21: https://www.facebook.com/MichaelCuuuk/posts/369741774499276 The came "Hot Stuff," which we highlighted on 4/10/20: https://www.facebook.com/page/103016317838491/search?q=hot%20stuff The next was "Bad Girls, which we will highlight soon. And then, Today's "Great Song:" "Dim All the Lights!" For the record, the next two were "No More Tears," (a duet with Barbra Streisand), which we will highlight at at later date...and "On the Radio," which we highlighted on 7/13/20. But back to "Dim All the Lights." :) It was written by Donna without a collaborator (a rarity), and she must have been feeling a bit "frisky" when she wrote it because Billboard Magazine called it "one of the sexiest songs ever recorded." They also said it sounds like a nice song to sway to at the prom, but then the groove becomes decidedly horizontal once it hits the bridge." A British magazine called Smash Hits was impressed by her vocals, claiming that at one point, she "holds a note for two hours!" (Well, not really...but 8 measures at mid-tempo sure SEEMS like a long time!) "Dim All the Lights" made it to #1 on Billboard's Dance Chart...but stalled at #2 on the Hot 100. Why? Because Donna's record label, Casablanca, released "No More Tears," while "Dim All the Lights" was still climbing the charts...and the duet raced past it and went to #1. Oops. But on the other hand...wow! :-0 "Dim All the Lights:" A "Great Song" in a long line of "Great Songs of 1979" by Donna Summer! (Four down and two to go!)
