The Smooth and Soulful "Sound of Philadelphia" gave us many "Great Songs of the '70s," and today we're highlighting one of the first: "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)" by the Delfonics.
It was a ballad drenched in a mixture of strings and horns--a perfect slow dance, and when it was released in December of 1969, it didn't take long to catch on with radio listeners.
Crossing over into 1970, the song reached #3 on the Soul Chart and #10 on the Hot 100. It won the 1970 Grammy Award for "Best R & B Vocal Performance by a Duo Or Group," and has been covered by a number of noteworthy artists...including Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle and The Trammps.
In 1989, The New Kids on the Block took their version to #8 on the Hot 100 and #12 on the Adult Contemporary Chart.
You don't hear the song on the radio much anymore, but click below and you can hear it today--as the "Great Song of '70s" it has always been!
