The British artist who sang today's "Great Song of the '70s" has sold more than 250 MILLION records worldwide--making him one of the best selling artists of all time!
Two Million of those records were sold in 1976, when Sir Cliff Richard released "Devil Woman." The song was a worldwide hit, charting in 11 countries...including #1 South Africa, #3 in both Australia and Canada, #5 in New Zealand, and #6 in both Ireland and the US!
The storyline sounds like something out of "The Twilight Zone:" A man who has been jinxed by a cat with evil eyes discovers that the gypsy woman he asks to break the curse was responsible for the curse in the first place.
You can almost hear Rod Serling add: "Somewhere up ahead...in the "Twilight Zone." :-)
In 2017, the song became popular again after it was used extensively in the film, "I, Tonya," the story of disgraced Olympic skater Tonya Harding. In the film, "Devil Woman" was the theme song of Tonya's mother, LaVona Golden--played by Allison Janney, who won an Oscar for the role.
"Devil Woman" by Cliff Richard: a "Great Song of 1976."
I'm sure Ms. Janney would be one of the millions who agree. :)
