It's hard to imagine that the creative team behind today's Great Song of 1980 couldn't--and wouldn't--come up with a hit.
The music for "Deja Vu" was written by Isaac Hayes while he was on tour with Dionne Warwick.
Dionne liked the tune and wanted to recorded it for her 1979 album, "Dionne," but Isaac hadn't written any lyrics for it.
She ran it by the album's producer, Barry Manilow, and he called upon lyricist Adrienne Anderson (who had co-written "Could It Be Magic," and "Daybreak" with Barry, as well as songs for Melissa Manchester and other artists).
With all that talent working on one song...it was no surprise that when "Deja Vu" was released as a single in late 1979, it climbed to the top of Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart by early 1980!
And then, Dionne won the Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance!
"Deja Vu" by Dionne Warwick: a true collaboration by some Great Artists on a Great Song to start the '80s!
Tomorrow: Holding on tight with ELO.
