Danny's Song (1973) 10/21/20

In 1971, Danny Loggins was celebrating the birth of his son, Colin, when his teenaged brother Kenny gifted him with a heartfelt, personal song that turned into a “Great Song of the '70s!”

“Danny's Song” was recorded by Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina, and released on their debut album, “Sittin' In.” Although the song wasn't released as a single, many stations played it as a non-charting album cut, and it became a crowd favorite at Loggins and Messina concerts. In 1973,

Anne Murray released a cover version, and it became a HUGE hit, especially in her home country of Canada, where it went to #1 on the Top 40, Adult Contemporary AND Country charts. In the US, it reached #1 on the AC Chart, #6 on the Hot 100 and #10 on the Country chart. The song also earned her a Grammy nomination for “Best Female Pop Performance.” (She lost, however, to Roberta Flack's “Killing Me Softly.”)

Anne has said many times that although she loved the song the first time she heard it, it took on an even more personal meaning after the birth of her first child a few years later.

So, in effect, the song was a gift to Anne Murray, as well as Danny Loggins.
