Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah) - Chic (1978) 12/7/22

Today, we're heading back to the disco, circa 1978, for the very first "Great Song" by the group Chic (who later gave us the classic dance tune "Le Freak.")

"Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah) is known for all its spoken "Yowsahs," but many people--aren't quite sure where the word came from...and what it means.

Yowsah is nonsense word coined a century ago by jazz violinist and early radio personality Ben Bernie while "scat singing" through his signature jazz tunes.

It popped back into the English lexicon with the 1969 release of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They," a film about a dance marathon.

In effect, "yowsah" means "wow!"

Or, if you want to put a contemporary spin on it, think of Matthew McConaughey saying, "All right, all right, all right!"

"Dance, Dance, Dance" was written by Nile Rodgers, Bernard Edwards, and Kenny Lehman, the masters of "disco groove, who wrote and/or produced almost every song Chic recorded.

On the charts, "6" seemed to be the lucky number.

While the song deservedly topped Billboard's Dance Chart, it also reached #6 on their Hot 100 and R & B Charts...as well as #6 in Canada and the UK!

So get off your...chair...and head for the nearest dance floor (or just turn up the volume) and "Dance, Dance, Dance" by Chic: a "Great Song of 1978! Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYfag2f5ghI
