Happy Father's Day!
In the late '80s, I was Operations Manager at WDEZ/WRIG in Wausau, Wisconsin.
While I held down a regular air shift at WRIG (Oldies), I was also heavily involved in programming WDEZ (Country). I even filled in on the air once in a while.
It was a good time to be a country music fan--Garth Brooks, Randy Travis, Clint Black, Alan Jackson, George Strait, the Judds, Mary Chapin-Carpenter and dozens more were cranking out Great Songs, one right after another.
One of my favorites at the time was a song by Holly Dunn.
"Daddy's Hands" was a tribute to her father, who was a minister.
Initially, she thought of it as a loving tribute, and really didn't expect it to be a hit.
But it was. When it was released as a single in 1986, country fans loved the sentiment.
It reached #7 on Billboard's Country Chart, and became a perfect Father's Day song. garnering two Grammy nominations in the process. ("Best Female Country Vocal Performance and "Best Country Song").
Daddy's Hands: a Great Country Song of 1986. (Note: "Great Country" was WDEZ's slogan back then...and still is!)
Note #2: Holly died of ovarian cancer in 2016. She was 59. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idd8_hRgm4Q
Tomorrow: Survivor Search.
