How 'bout a "Great Song of the '70s" that sounds like a funky cross between Earth, Wind & Fire and Chicago!?"
The Average White Band followed up their 1974 hit "Pick U[p the Pieces" (which we highlighted back on 4/17/20) with a song that many people thought was even better. (
1975's "Cut the Cake" was the kind of song that would not only fill the dance floor at the local disco, but would make you want to crank down your car windows and crank up your radio on a hot summer day!
It was a triple chart hit, reaching #7 on Billboard's Rhythm & Blues Chart, #10 on the Hot 100, and #13 on the Dance Chart.
It was also nominated for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 1976 Grammy Awards, but it ultimately lost to "Shining Star" by Earth, Wind & Fire, which we highlighted way back on 11/19/19.
It's interesting to note that all three songs--although not exactly "sound-alikes," are truly "feel alikes," if that's a "thing." (Compare them all with the links below.)
"Cut the Cake" by The Average White Band: a delicious slice of funk, and a "Great Song of 1975!"
