Crazy Horses (1972) 2/12/21 The Osmonds

Updated: Feb 22, 2021

Today, I'm out to prove that almost NOBODY could rock harder than...THE OSMONDS.

You read that correctly.

A few days ago, I was was listening to Donny Osmond's guest deejay stint on Sirius/XM's '70s on 7, and I learned quite a few little tidbits of trivia—especially about today's “Great song of 1972!”

First of all, after 1970, The Osmonds were basically a schizophrenic band. While Donny was recording covers of “kid pop” like “Go Away Little Girl,” the rest of the brothers wanted to rock out.

They were given that chance and surprised almost everyone on the planet with “Crazy Horses.” They rocked so hard they ALMOST sounded like a cross between Jimi Hendrix and Led Zepplin. I'm NOT exaggerating!

Several years years later, Metallica approached them to ask how to recreate the “horse” effects so they could make it a part of their set list! Pretty amazing! (Even more amazing? Countless other hard rock and punk bands continue to record and/or play it in concert today! See the link below!)

Sone other things I learned: The lead singer on the verses was Jay—the ONLY time he sang lead on ANY Osmond song! Merrill sang lead on the chorus, and despite the fact you see him in the video, Donny did NOT sing on the record! (He was most likely off recording “Puppy Love” or something.”)

“Crazy Horses” took Europe by storm, hitting #1 in Belgium, The Netherlands, and France, #2 in the UK and #5 in Switzerland. Here in North America, after the shock wore off, it went to #12 in Canada and #14 in the US.

Go ahead, turn up your speakers, click the link, and rock out! If you've never heard the song before, you're in for a shock!
