In 1976, The Climax Blues Band was about to release their 8th album, "Gold Plated," when their record company (BTM) put a hold on it and demanded they add a "radio-friendly" song. In other words: a hit single.
Well, that was annoying. But it was a also challenge.
The guys sat down and kicked around a few ideas...when suddenly, in the words of bassist Derek Holt, "it came out of nowhere!"
"It" was a song about how exhausting touring could be...and it became a "Great Song of 1977!"
"Couldn't Get It Right" was so good, the record company accused them of withholding the song!
In short order, it was added to the album, "Gold Plated" was given the go-ahead, and "Couldn't Get It Right" was released as a single.
BTM certainly got it's "radio-friendly" hit! Chartwise, the song went to #10 in the UK, #9 in South Africa, #8 in Canada and #3 in the US.
It may have come out of nowhere, but The Climax Blues Band certainly "Got it right" with a "Great Song of the '70s!
