Come Sail Away (1978) 6/10/20

Writer: Michael CookMichael Cook

I feel pretty comfortable in saying that not too many “Great Songs of the '70s” were inspired by the first chapter of the Old Testament book of Ezekiel.

In 1978, Dennis DeYoung of Styx was somewhat depressed after recent album sales had failed to meet expectations, so he sat down and started writing a song that dealt with achieving one's goals, using “sailing” as a metaphor.

Somehow that led Dennis from sailing ships...to spaceships...to the Book of Ezekiel. (For the Old Testament story, click here: https://biblia.com/bible/esv/ezekiel/1

)“Come Sail Away” was Top 10 hit in the US (#8) and in Canada (#9), and is STILL popular on Classic Rock stations today.

The song has also been used on several TV shows, including South Park, Freaks and Geeks, Community, The Goldbergs, and Glee.

I COULD say it was a hit of Biblical proportions...but I won't. I WILL say, however, that “Come Sail Away" was Great Song of 1978!”
