The Bee Gees recorded a number of "Great Songs of the '70s," even before they started cranking out some incredible disco tunes.
We highlighted two of their earlier songs back on 7/25/20: 1971's "Lonely Days" and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart:" https://www.facebook.com/MichaelCuuuk/posts/197481281725327
In 1976, just before Saturday Night Fever changed everything, they handed off a non-disco ballad to Olivia Newton-John.
"Come on Over," was written by Barry and Robin, and appeared on the Bee Gees 1975 album "Main Course," with Robin singing lead. It was never released as a single.
Olivia covered it in 1976,and while both versions were definitely country-flavored, Olivia's was a little sadder and more poignant. You could feel the longing in her voice, which made it more relatable to lonely people everywhere.
This was definitely reflected on the charts. In John Denver-like fashion, Olivia was able to turn "Come on Over" into a crossover hit. On the Country Chart, it reached #3 in Canada and #5 in the US. On the Adult Contemporary Chart, it reached #5 in Canada, while going all the way to #1 in the US.
