Come Monday - Jimmy Buffett (1974) 9/30/22

Most touring musicians will tell you that the worst part of being on the road is being away from your loved ones.

There are several songs about this, but today we're zeroing in on Jimmy Buffett's Great Song of 1974: "Come Monday."

In 1972, Jimmy was in Key West (where else!?) when he bumped into a vacationing University of South Carolina student and model named Jane Slagsvol.

Before long, they were in love, but with Jimmy on the road most of the time, it was a long distance relationship that drove Jimmy crazy.

In 1973, Jane was in California, and as luck would have it, Jimmy was booked at a Labor Day weekend show in San Francisco. They were able to spend some quality time together, which only made Jimmy's heart ache worse when he had to get back on the road.

He sat down and wrote "Come Monday" about the experience--completely autobiographical--and when the song was released as a single, people could hear the sadness between the lines...and could sympathize. Before long, the song was sitting at #3 on Billboard's Adult contemporary chart.

A low budget video was made of the song, which actually starred Jimmy and Jane--a perfect way for them to spend some extra time together.

And in 1977, they were married. Who doesn't love a happy ending!? :-)

TRIVIA: There are two slightly different versions of the song. In one, Jimmy states he has his "hush puppies" on. The other, mentions hiking boots instead. This was because some radio stations...including all BBC affiliates in UK...refused to play any song that mentioned a brand name.
