You've all heard the musical term "Easy Listening," right?
Soft, gentle and "easy "Come Saturday Morning." See what I did there?
Today's "Great Song of 1970," "Come Saturday Morning" by the Sandpipers is a classic easy listening song...with an interesting history.
The single came from the soundtrack of a 1969 film called "The Sterile Cuckoo" starring a very young Liza Minnelli as "Pookie," a quirky college freshman who enters into "a relationship with a young man at another nearby college. They meet while waiting for a bus, and the next Saturday Morning (There's the song tie-in!), Pookie shows up at his dorm. From there, it gets more interesting... strange...and ultimately sad.
Liza was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance.
The song itself achieved a chart rarity. "Come Saturday Morning" was released in late 1969, and in January of '70, it stalled at #83 on the Hot 100, but on the EASY LISTENING Chart, it reached #9. Then in June of '70, it was re-released, and THIS time, it went all the way up to #17 on the Hot 100 and #5 on the Easy Listening Chart. Basically, it was a hit twice in the same calendar year!
At the Academy Awards, it was nominated for "Best Original Song," but lost to the tough-to-beat "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head."
All of the above make "Come Saturday Morning" by the Sandpipers an "Easy Listening" classic, and a "Great Song of 1970!"
