Clap for the Wolfman - Guess Who (1974) "Did You Boogie with Your Baby - Flash Cadillac (1976) 5/10

Two for One Today!

From the early '60s right up until his early death in 1995, Robert Weston Smith was one of the most popular and influential disc jockeys in Rock & Roll History. Of course, you remember him by his "radio name:" Wolfman Jack!

The Wolfman's career was something to behold. With his incredibly raspy voice and his knack for appealing to teens with suggestive, but lighthearted patter, he was a hit no matter what station he was on.

In the late '60s and early '70s, he was all over the West Coast, broadcasting from a series of Mexican radio stations. These stations, located just south of the border, all had 250,000 wats of power, 5 TIMES the amount of wattage allowed in the US!

This extra strength meant young listeners from San Diego to Seattle could tune in every night and hear the Wolfman "howl!"

One of his early listeners was a young filmmaker named George Lucas, who cast The Wolfman in his incredibly successful 1973 coming-of-age film: "American Graffiti."

After that, The Wolfman was everywhere...with syndicated radio shows playing all over the US, and several Film and TV roles...including the sequel "More American Graffiti," and the Host of TV's "Midnight Special."

He even started appearing on hit records...including today's "Great Song of 1974: "Clap for the Wolfman" by The Guess Who.

This fun little tribute showed just how famous The Wolfman had become...by reaching #6 in the US, #4 in Canada, and the Top 20 in Belgium, The Netherlands, and South Africa.

Wolfman Jack was loved and admired for his craziness and showmanship by fans--and by DJs like me.

"Clap for the Wolfman" was a great showcase for his talents--and, of course, the talents of The Guess Who! It was a "Great Song of 1974!"

BONUS: In 1976, Flash Cadillac & The Continental Kids released a song featuring The Wolfman that made it to #29 on the Hot 100. "Did You Boogie with Your Baby" was a fun throwback to those songs from the '50s and '60s that Wolfman Jack used to play back in the day. Check it out below!
