Remember the Saturday morning cartoon show "Groovy Ghoulies?
Neither do I...but according to Wikipedia, the show ran on CBS from 1970-71. It was set in a decrepit castle, and focused on the monstrous but mostly friendly creatures who lived there.
"Groovy Ghoulies" was produced by Dick Monda, who also wrote and recorded music for the show.
Believe it or not, he actually came up with a "Great Song of 1971," which he recorded under his alias: Daddy Dewdrop.
"Chick-A-Boom (Don't Ya Jes' Love it)" was used in the show, and then released on a separate Daddy Dewdrop album.
Monda---I mean Daddy Dewdrop--talked his way through the song, leaving most of the actual singing to others.
Overall, it was so weird and catchy, it "creeped" into the Top 10 in 4 countries: #2 in Canada, #4 in New Zealand, #9 in the US and #10 in Australia.
That built-in audience of young "Groovy Ghoulie" watchers probably helped boost sales and chart positions, but still...no one ever said a novelty song couldn't be a "Great Song."
So here it is: from 1971, Daddy Dewdrop and "Chick-a-Boom (Don't Ya Jes' Love It)!"
