Sad news for Rolling Stones fans: drummer Charlie Watts has passed away at the age of 80.
As always, for obituaries, I defer to the expert and thorough writers at Variety Magazine:
I also think it's essential to include the obituary from Rolling Stone Magazine:
In looking over the HUGE body of "Stones" work that Charlie was a major part of since 1962, there are several songs that stand out, including two we've already highlighted in the past:
"Tumbling Dice" (1972):

"Beast of Burden (1978):

Most music critics agree the above songs were two of Charlie's best, and I'd like to add one more--even though it just missed the '70s as a "Great Song of 1969."
"Honky Tonk Women" starts with "More Cowbell" (which, oddly, was played by producer Jimmy Miller instead of Charlie), but then Charlie kicks in a backbeat that truly helped to make the song a classic--along with Keith's guitar and Mick's vocals.
The song was an incredible world-wide hit, reaching the Top 5 in 15 countries, including #1 in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Switzerland, Denmark, Ireland, the UK and the US!
But truly, these are just 3 examples of Charlie Watts' brilliance with the sticks. He will be sorely missed--not just by fans of the Rolling Stones, but by EVERYONE who loves "Great Songs" of the '60s, '70s, '80s---and right up to today! R.I.P. Charlie Watts.
