Merry Christmas to all! May your day be merry & bright, and may the true meaning of the day shine brightly within you.
Today we're highlighting a "Great Song" that was never intended to be about Christmas...and yet...
In 1977, Kenny Loggins was in transition. He had split with Jim Messina and was putting together his debut solo album.
According to Kenny, he was in New York, writing songs during the Holiday season, and was incredibly homesick. The fact that he wanted be elsewhere gave birth to the phrase, "Celebrate Me Home."
He considered it to be a "filler phrase," something that would be replaced when he came up with something better.
BUT...when his producer, the legendary Phil Ramone, heard it, he told Kenny it was the PERFECT phrase, so Kenny got together with Jazz artist Bob James (Probably best known for the song "Angela," the theme from the TV series "Taxi"), and finished the song around the idea.
"Celebrate Me Home" then became the title of his debut album, and although it was released as a single, it didn't chart.
HOWEVER, since 1977, the song has become a holiday standard, especially during the pandemic.
And over the years, it's been covered by the likes of Ruben Studdard, LeAnn Rimes (with Gavin DeGraw), Jennifer Nettles, and Josh Groban.
"Celebrate Me Home" by Kenny Loggins: a "Great Christmas Song of 1977," originally unintended, but now a standard, and relatable to those of you who are homesick this Christmas.
