Can't Get It Out of My Head - ELO (1974) 2/20/22

Sometimes a songwriter needs a little motivation to get the creative juices flowing.

According to ELO's Jeff Lynne, in the early days of his career, he and his father were in the middle of an argument, when Mr. Lynn said, "That's the trouble with your tunes. They've got not bloody tune!"

Well, as you can imagine, that didn't sit well with Jeff He said to himself, "I'll show HIM," and he sat down and wrote today's "Great Song of 1974."

"Can't Get it Out of My Head" is about a guy who has a beautiful dream, but wakes up to find he's someone with no chance of making the dream come true.

Sounds depressing, and yet most critics agree it's one of Jeff's best songs out of everything he has written for The Electric Light Orchestra, The Traveling Wilburys and several other artists.

When the song was released as a single from the album "Eldorado," it became ELO's first American hit, reaching #9 on the Hot 100 as 1974 crossed into 1975.

So thanks for the motivation, dad!
