Today's “Great Song of the '70s.” was originally written for the soundtrack of a movie that never got made!
According to Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, who wrote “Bungle in the Jungle,” the film was supposed to be a black comedy about a dead girl visiting Heaven and her various misadventures in the afterlife. Sounds a little bit like TV's “The Good Place,” don't you think?
Anyway, Ian saved it for the Jethro Tull album, “War Child,” and in 1974, it was released as a single. Much to Ian's chagrin, the song did very well in the the US (#12 on the Hot 100), and especially in Canada (#4 on the Top 40).
Ian actually thought the song was one of his weaker efforts, and felt that since it didn't chart anywhere else in the world, his analysis was correct. Apparently he didn't think much of North American music fans!
Trivia: Over the years boxing fans have wondered if the song had anything to do with the “Rumble in the Jungle,” the heavyweight fight in Zaire between George Foreman and Muhammed Ali—which also took place in 1974. According to Ian, the song was written and released well before the fight, so if there's any connection at all, it came from the boxing community. I guess that settles that.
“Bungle in the Jungle,” despite Ian Anderson's opinion, it's a “Great Song of the '70s!
