The album sold 6 MILLION copies, and thanks to extensive airplay on Album Oriented Rock (AOR) stations, the single of the same name crossed over to Billboard's Hot 100 and went to #23 in 1975.
Since then, the song has become--not just legendary--but iconic!
*It's #21 on Rolling Stone Magazine's Top 500 of All Time.
*The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame named it one of the 500 Songs that Shaped Rock & Roll.
*The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has it at 135 on its list of the Greatest Songs of the 20th Century.
*National Public Radio named it one of the Most Important American Musical Works of the 20th century.
Obviously, it's one of the "Great Songs of the '70s."
Not bad for a singer who admits he was just trying to break into the mainstream and build a wider audience.
I wonder whatever happened to that Springsteen fella. ;-)
