In 1941, The Andrews Sisters recorded a song that not only went to #6 on the charts, it became an iconic World War II tune, and the Recording industry Association of America (RIAA) ranked it as the #6 song of the entire 20th Century!
Thirty-two years later, in 1973, Bette Midler released "Delta Dawn" from her "Divine Miss M" album. Unfortunately,Tanya Tucker (Country) and Helen Reddy (Pop) had already hit the charts with it, but FORTUNATELY, radio started playing the "B" side: the old Andrews Sisters song, jazzed up by Bette and her producer--some guy named Barry Manilow. :)
THIS time, the song went to #1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart...PLUS Bette won the Grammy Award for "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance!" Here it is: one of the "Greatest Songs of the '40s, '70s" and the 20th Century!
