The group A Taste of Honey took a somewhat unusual road to stardom.
Before signing with Capitol Records, they perfected their sound by traveling the world with the USO, playing for servicemen and women in places like Spain, Morocco, Thailand and Japan.
All that touring and “perfecting” paid off, because in 1978, their debut single, “Boogie Oogie Oogie,” pulled off a rare triple crown: 1 on Billboard's Hot 100, Soul Chart, and Disco Chart. It also went to #1 on Canada's Disco Chart and #2 on their Top 40.
The song is one of the smoothest dance tunes of the disco era...and has been featured in dozens of TV shows, movies and video games—everything from “Nip/Tuck” to “Contact” to “Grand Theft Auto IV.”
A Taste of Honey would go on to have several other minor hits...and one more #1: a cover of Kyu Sakimoto's 1963 hit “Sukiyaki” in 1981.
“Boogie Oogie Oogie:” A Great Song of 1978!
And from 1981, here's “Sukiyaki:”
