Bluer Than Blue - Michael Johnson (1978) 1/28/23

Randy Goodrum is probably a name you've never heard before, but he wrote some "Great Songs," including "Anne Murray's "You Needed Me, " Steve Perry's "Oh Sherrie," and today's highlighted song: Michael Johnson's "Bluer than Blue."

It's a breakup song full of irony: losing the love of your life can give you a lot of things--including a new and exciting future, but the one thing it can't give you is solace--leaving you "Bluer Than Blue."

Randy freely admitted that he had not experienced that sort of thing first hand. He wrote it as--in his words--a "premise." In other words, how he might feel if it should happen to him.

In 1978, when Michael Johnson was putting together his aptly titled album, "The Michael Johnson Album," he felt the song was strong, but when "Bluer than Blue" was released as a single, he was surprised at just how strong it was!

Before long, it was sitting at #1 on the Adult Contemporary Charts in both the US and Canada. It also did well on the Top 40 Charts: #6 in Canada and #12 in the US.

Obviously, there were MANY people who appreciated the irony of the song, proving that songwriter Randy Goodrum was on the right emotional track, and Michael Johnson had interpreted it perfectly.
