If you went by just the title of today's "Great Song of the '70s, you'd think it was a love song. In fact, many people think "Best of My Love" by the Eagles is a wedding song.
It's not.
According to Don Henley, who wrote the song with Glenn Frey and J.D. Souther, it's a breakup song. The lyric line, " You see it your way, I see it mine, but we both see it slipping away" tells the story of a relationship that is ending, not necessarily in anger, but because of irreconcilable differences.
The guys wrote the song while hanging out at their favorite bar, studying the women and relationships swirling around them through the eyes of "typical frustrated men."
In 1975, when "Best of My Love" was released as a single from the album, "On the Border," it became he Eagles first #1 song in the US. In fact, not only did it top the Top 40 and Adult Contemporary Charts in the States, it did the same in Canada.
Trivia: When the song "Best of My Love" by The Emotions (which we highlighted back on 2/16/20) was released in 1977, it became the first #1 song to have a matching title with another #1 song! (Check the link below for more info on the song.)
"Best of My Love" by The Eagles: A "Great Song of '75," no matter what you think it's about.
