British glam rockers The Sweet were driven off the stage at the Grand Hall, when the audience started throwing bottles and other items at them.
Not to be discouraged, band members Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn wrote a song about the experience--and slowly, over the next few years, "Ballroom Blitz" became an international hit, eventually reaching the Top 10 in 14 countries...including #1 in Canada, Germany, Ireland, Denmark, and Australia, In the US, it peaked at #5.
Chapman and Chinn were striving to make the song sound like pandemonium had broken loose--and they certainly succeeded! It's fast, it's fun, and it's always been a guaranteed floor-filler at the clubs.
For that reason, I believe "Ballroom Blitz is a "Great Song of the '70s!"
From 1973-74-75-and 76 (depending on the country), here's The Sweet!
