John Denver released one “Great Song” after another in the early '70s, and believe it or not, some people didn't appreciate his success.
In 1974, he released the album, “Back Home Again,” and late in the year, the title cut was HUGE on all the main charts.
In both Canada and the US, it went to #1 on the Country and Adult Contemporary charts. On the Hot #100, it was #10 in Canada and #5 in the US.
It won the 1975 Country Music Association (CMA) Award for “Song of the Year,” and John won “Entertainer of the Year.”
That did not sit well with some folks, including Charlie Rich, who had an amazing 5 country chart toppers in 1974...and who was tapped to open the “entertainer envelope” and read who won. After reading John's name, Charlie lit the envelope on fire in protest. Many in the audience cheered!
Ouch.
But regardless of Charlie's feelings about John Denver, “Back Home Again” was a “Great Song of the '70s!”
