One of my favorite groups from the '70s was Bread. In fact, they were the very first group I saw in concert, circa 1972.
Today's “Great Song of the '70s” is my favorite Bread song. It's not their most well-known, nor was it one of their biggest hits...but it's a beautiful song just the same.
It was written by lead singer David Gates after he watched the film “Breakfast at Tiffany's.” He was enamored by Audrey Hepburn's beauty, and wrote the song with her in mind.Of course, he didn't want to be blatant about his crush, so he altered the name of the song slightly...to “Aubrey,” and wrote lyrics about a romance that would never happen. He considers the melody the best he's ever written.
Although it wasn't a chart topper, it still did very well. In 1973, it peaked at #4 of Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart, and #6 on the matching chart in Canada. On the Top 40 chart, it reached #15 in the US and #8 in New Zealand.“
Aubrey:” a not-so-very-ordinary girl or name...but in my opinion, a “Great Song of the '70s!
