Show of hands: How many of you thought the song “Arizona” by Mark Lindsay was about the Grand Canyon State?

How many of you thought the song was about a girl?

The correct answer is: “Girl”


This “Great Song of 1970” was actually about a “hippie chick” with whom the singer has issues. He believes she is immature and idealistic and urges her to grow up—but in spite of their differences, he just can't seem to just let her go.


The song was written by Kenny Young, but Mark, playing hooky from his group, Paul Revere and the Raiders, went into the studio with the legendary Wrecking Crew, and cranked out a version that hit the Top 10 in 5 countries—including #4 in Canada and #10 in the US.
