Like John Lennon & Paul McCartney, who shared songwriting credits for the Beatles, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards usually shared songwriting credits for the Rolling Stones.
Today's “Great Song of the '70s” however, was written almost entirely by Keith.
It's a breakup song—that much is for certain. But what has never been clear is who inspired it.
Was “Angie” inspired by David Bowie's first wife Angela? Actress Angie Dickinson? Keith's daughter Dandelion Angela? Or someone else?
Sometimes Keith says it was his daughter, but he has also said he wrote the song before he HAD a daughter. Then there's Mick, who says it was inspired by the end of his affair with singer Marianne Faithfull.
Well, whoever it was, they certainly inspired a HUGE worldwide hit: In 1973, it reached the Top 10 in 16 countries, including #1 in the US, Canada, Australia, France, The Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland.
“Angie,” you're beautiful...and a “Great Song of the '70s! From the album: “Goat's Head Soup:”
