Finding a “Great Song of the 70s” to highlight on the 4th of July was difficult, mainly for lack of material.
What few songs I could find just didn't seem right to highlight in this extremely odd and trying year. I also wanted to avoid controversy because that's not what this blog is about.
Many worthy songs were from other decades, and I could have “broken format” and used one of those, but I decided to go with a song that was written in 1964, recorded in 1968, but not actually released as single until 1972. Even then, it only made it to #97 on the Hot 100.
The song is about a young couple desperately searching for the American dream, and the longing in the lyrics and vocals is palpable.
The song is “America” by Simon &Garfunkel. Paul wrote it, and the “Kathy” he mentions in the song was his girlfriend at the time: Kathy Chitty.
There's a good chance you've never heard this song before—unless you own the album “Bookends,” but I truly feel the emotional impact it can have makes it a “Great Song of the '70s” in general, and the 4th of July in particular.
May you all find your American Dream.
