All Right Now (1970) 9/27/20

It had been a horrible gig. The British group Free had walked off the stage to, their words, “the sound of our own footsteps,” and for a few minutes, they were pretty upset.

But then, bassist Andy Fraser started noodling around with his guitar. Then lead singer Paul Rodgers (who went on to form the group Bad Company) joined in with some made-up-on-the-spot lyrics...and before they left the dressing room, they had pretty much created a “Great Song of 1970!”

After a little more tinkering (and more cowbell!), they recorded and released “All Right Now,” and everything was MORE than all right, as they watched it climb into the Top 10 in 13 countries! It went to #1 in Denmark and Sweden, and over here in North America, it went to #4 in both the US and Canada!

Unfortunately, Free turned out to be a one-hit wonder. Due to in-fighting and addiction problems with guitarist Paul Kossof, the group broke up in 1973.

But in 1970, it was “All Right Now!”
