All I Know (1973) 3/23/20

Updated: Mar 4, 2020

Fair is Fair! :-)

Yesterday, we featured Paul Simon as a solo artist with a "Great Song from 1972." ("Me & Julio Down By the Schoolyard.")

So today, we're featuring Art Garfunkel as a solo artist with a "Great Song from 1973!"

At this point in their tumultuous relationship, it seemed as if they were playing a game called "Who Can Have More Hits?" Paul ultimately won that contest, but in the early years of the '70s, they were going toe-to-toe (or maybe it was throat-to-throat) on the charts.

"All I Know" was written by Hall of Fame songwriter Jimmy Webb, who had already written classics like "Up, Up and Away," "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "Galveston," and "MacArthur Park."

With Art's soaring tenor and an instrumental track featuring the legendary "Wrecking Crew" (who played on nearly EVERYONE's records in the '60s and '70s), the song locked down the #1 spot on Billboard's Easy Listening Chart for 4 weeks in 1973, while reaching #9 on the Hot 100.

In 2010, the song was used in the series finale of the TV series, "Nip/Tuck."

Also in 2010, Jimmy Webb recorded a version with Linda Ronstadt--after she had announced her retirement due to progressive supranuclear palsy (originally diagnosed as Parkinson's disease). This is believed to be Linda's last recording. (See link Below)

But back to Art: Although he had a number of other solo hits, "All I Know" was his most successful--and a "Great Song of the '70s)!
