Pretty much everyone knows that The Four Tops were one of Motown's premiere groups, but it may surprise you to learn that when Motown moved operations from Detroit to Los Angeles in 1972, they cut ties with the "Tops," along with several other groups including Martha Reeves & The Vandellas and The Marvelettes.
The Four Tops then signed with ABC/Dunhill Records, where they continued their streak of hits with today's "Great Song of `1973!"
"Ain't No Woman (Like the One I Got)" sounded like a classic Motown song, with all four of the "Tops" (Levi Stubbs, Lawrence Payton, Obie Benson, and Duke Fakir) taking turns singing lead.
The song was a major hit, reaching #2 on Billboard's Rhythm & Blues Chart, #4 on the Hot 100 and #14 on the Adult Contemporary Chart.
"Ain't No Woman (Like the One I Got)" became their biggest post-Motown hit, and definitely a "Great Song of the '70s!"
Note: The song was originally recorded by Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds, but not released as a single. You can hear this very different version by clicking the link below.
