Continuing our first anniversary celebration of “Great Songs of the '70s,” we revisit the second of the first 4 songs we highlighted last year!
Fans of '70s music certainly remember the Five Man Electrical Band and their “Great Song of 1971:” “Signs,” which went to #4 on Billboard's Hot 100! We highlighted the song back on February 20th, and you can check it out here: https://cuuuk8.wixsite.com/mysite/post/5e4212ef32f90e0017be80fe
But they also had a follow-up hit that went to #3 on the Top 40---in Canada.
Over the past 12 months, I have mentioned several times that growing up in the Toledo, Ohio area, (a mere 50-ish miles from Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario as the crow flies), gave my childhood friends, classmates and I the unique experience of hearing the best of rock & roll, Motown AND Canadian music (as played by the 50,000 watt Canadian radio giant CKLW, as well as Toledo's own WOHO and WTTO.)
Little did we know that many of the songs we loved were “Canadian hits” that were never heard in other parts of the US. We were spoiled, and I made that cultural discovery when I moved to Wisconsin.
It's hard to fathom why today's song by the Five Man Electrical Band, “Absolutely Right” wasn't a bigger hit in the US (#26 on the Hot 100). But in my honest opinion, the song really ROCKS, making it a “Great Song of the '70s,” whether you've heard it before today...or not!
