1973 and '74 were BIG years for Charlie Rich. He'd been a successful country and rockabilly artist for several years... but all of a sudden, for that 2-year period, he became "King of the Crossovers!"
It all started with two "Great Songs of 1973:" "Behind Closed Doors" and "The Most Beautiful Girl."
We highlighted "Doors" back on 3/13/20, and "Girl" on 6/25/20, and you can read those posts by clicking the links below.
Today, we're crossing into 1974 for Charlie's third "Great Song" in a row: "A Very Special Love Song."
Charlie has said his inspiration for the song came from French composer Michel LeGrand's theme for the movie "Summer of '42," but he also said you can't tell from listening to it.
"A Very Special Love Song" is definitely country...but it appealed to fans across the musical spectrum and became a triple-chart hit in both the US and Canada.
Canadian Numbers: #1 on the Country Chart, #2 on the Adult Contemporary Chart, and #4 on the Top 40.
US Numbers: #1 Country and Adult Contemporary, #11 Hot 100. It also won the 1975 Grammy Award for "Best Country Song."
After that, Charlie's hits started drifting back over to just the country charts, and although his successful career continued, he never again matched the peak he reached in 1973-74.
